The SMDG has an ambitious and on-going development program aimed at broadening the current scope of messages. It is also addressing associated communications processes, particularly the practical exploitation of Web technology.

The SMDG will continue to develop, upgrade and promote UN/EDIFACT EDI-messages for the Maritime Industry, provide up-to-date information about EDI for Shipping Lines and Container Terminals, obtain user manuals for relevant messages from other organizations such as PROTECT, establish hyperlinks to relevant Internet sites, like ISO, BIC and others.

SMDG will also explore new areas, which may be of interest to its members. Such new areas include the application of ebXML, RFID tags for electronic seals and container tags, security issues, etc.
